...Will old rockers' concert in Beijing be the day the music dies?
By Tian Wei
Source: Global Times [21:36 August 22 2010]
Cui Jian, the godfather of China's rock'n'roll, was labeled as a threat to social stability for decades, and so denied the possibility of public concerts.
It was such a long and painstaking process that when he was asked what his dreams were, he said: performing publicly in the Chinese capital, watching the Rolling Stones perform, and singing on the
same stage with them.
Fortunately, things have changed. Cui managed to realize all of three of his ambitions 20 years after he became a household name in China.
Over the years, the pure underground nature of China's rock'n'roll has changed dramatically.
This is well reflected by the fact that many of the country's rock legends are about to perform. ...
Sinking of South Korean warship another 'smoking gun?'
By Tian Wei
The term "smoking gun" first entered the vocabulary of international relations in 2002, when the Bush administration was trying to justify its planned invasion of Iraq. At that time the term
referred to claimed evidence that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
After the invasion, of course, no such weapons were found. That's why we should be cautious of claims of another "smoking gun," this time in the Korean Peninsula. ...

Chinese world cup dreams spur better soccer
By Tian Wei, Global Times [23:28 July 11 2010]
I received a twitter message from a foreign journalist friend who went to South Africa to cover the World Cup. He wanted to know why when most of the sports reporters went home with their home teams, most of the Chinese journalists stayed in South Africa, despite the Chinese team never having even made it to the tournament.
I told him there were a billion Chinese back home thirsty for any information about the World Cup! China has caught soccer fever for over a month, since the finals began. Fans even adjusted their
schedules to accommodate matches that fell at 2:30 am Beijing time.
And that is nothing new for the country. ...
Strong will needed to escape Chinese soccer shame
By Tian Wei
Over the weekend, I had a long conversation with a soccer fan who has been following the sport for 40 years. When I asked his thoughts as to why both Brazil and Argentina, two of the most-admired
teams, were kicked out at the quarterfinals, he gave many reasons, but concluded with, "Remember, the most important is that soccer is a beautiful game!"
I know he was referring to the unpredictability of match results and the rise and fall of dark horses and legends alike. But later when considering over his words, I felt like turning the question
around. Soccer is a beautiful game, but which sport isn't?
For sure, "the beautiful game" has long been a slogan for soccer. ...
...Asia still has motive to celebrate at World Cup
Source: Global Times [03:02 June 28 2010]

I was confused. Watching the Sumarais of Japan against the Danes: Is it an Asian team? Are you sure?
Speed, skill, precision and passion, words that were not traditionally associated with teams from our neighborhood suddenly become the most descriptive. As a result, they went into the Top 16
together with the warriors of South Korea.
None of this, though, should be considered a miracle. ...
US emerging as force to be reckoned with in world-class soccer

It was a reporting trip that I took seven years ago to the US that led to my fascination with soccer.
I was asked to follow Team USA in the FIFA Women's World Cup, held in the country that year. When I wandered into the RFK Stadium in Washington DC, frustrated by the uninspiring assignment, I was
shocked. For a stadium large enough to hold 55,000 people, it was almost full.
It was only natural as a journalist to wonder where that country, well known for baseball, American football and basketball, was heading in the world of soccer. ...
